Indian institute of management, Calcutta is the first Indian institute of management. IIM is a public business school in Joka, a locality in South West Kolkata, India. Later IIM was acknowledged as an Institute of National Importance by the government of India in 2017. 

In 1947, when India became Independent, the planning commission, an institution in the government of India, was assigned to keep an eye on the development of the nation, but the commission started facing problems in finding suitable managers. In order to solve this problem in 1959, the planning commission summoned professor George Robins from University Of California. 

By the recommendation of the professor, Indian Government decided to bring up two management institutes named Indian Institute Of Management. In November 1961, the first Indian Institute Of Management was established in Kolkata in a joint effort of a business school named MIT Sloan School of Management and the Ford foundation and the Indian Industry. The first director of IIM was the former chairman of Hindustan Unilever Limited KT Chandy. The foundation stone of IIM was laid by the former Deputy Prime Minister  Morarji Desai on 15 December 1968 and later a new campus came in 1975. The college is located on an area of 135 acres. College provides good accommodation for the students and has a good faculty.

Along with these programmes IIM also offers Executive Education in Management Development Programmes (MDP) and Custom Corporate Programmes, Management Programmes for Armed Forces Officers (AFP), Distance education  programmes through Hughes net Global Education and NIIT Imperia and Research and Consultancy programmes. The IIMs admission procedure is based on the score scored by the candidate in the CAT exam.
