The Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (IIOR) was set up on August 1, 1977 with the height of All India Coordinated Research Project on Oilseeds (AICORPO).

It worked with the Headquarters at Rajendranagar, Hyderabad with Project Director as its regulatory head with the help of seven Project Coordinators for groundnut, rapeseed-mustard, sesame and niger, linseed , castor, safflower and sunflower. Accordingly, groundnut and rapeseed-mustard were delinked from the Directorate with the foundation of the National Research Center for every one of these harvests during 1979 and 1993 separately. In April 2000, the AICRP on sesame and niger and linseed were isolated from the authoritative control of IIOR. With the upgradation of DOR to IIOR, sesame,nniger and linseed has been added with the current command harvests like castor, safflower and sunflower.
