Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad was formerly known as Indian School of Mines before its conversion into an IIT and Established in 1926. IIT Dhanbad is situated in Sardar Patel Nagar, Dhanbad, Jharkhand. IIT Dhanbad was ranked 12 among Engineering colleges by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 in Engineering category and ranked 22 in the overall category. The institute offers more than 60 courses in Engineering, Pure Sciences, Management and Humanities. Below given image showcases year-wise growth of IIT Dhanbad . Since its establishment, the Institute has undergone considerable expansion of its activities, and presently it can be considered as a total technology education institute. The academic profile of the Institute changed over the time to keep abreast with the technological challenges and societal aspirations. The Institute has been in service to the nation for the last 91 years contributing immensely as a full-fledged technical institution of international acclaim offering a host of programmes like B. Tech., M. Tech., MBA, Executive MBA, M. Sc. Tech, M.Sc., Integrated M.Sc. Tech, Integrated M. Tech, Dual Degree and B.E. for national and foreign national students. In addition the Institute offers full as well as part time Ph. D. programmes, while also awarding D.Sc. as the highest degree of academic achievement.

The institute has 11 hostels  which are all named around some precious stones like Diamond, Sapphire, Amber, Ruby, Opal,Jasper etc. Some of these hostels are as old as 94 years, and have capacities ranging from 400 to 2200 students. Four of them are for girls and remaining Seven for boys, both include one hostel each for international students.Admission to the courses of BTech and Integrated BTech-MTech are done from JEE Advanced qualified students. Admission to the MTech courses are done either through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) or through a special examination conducted by the institute. Admissions to the MBA program is done through the Common Admission Test (CAT).

The IIT ISM Dhanbad has outdoor and indoor facilities for sports like athletics, cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, squash, chess, and table tennis. Interested students are also trained in combat sports such as karate and boxing. Students choose between National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS), National Sports Organisation (NSO) and yoga for an extracurricular activity.
