Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati is the sixth Indian Institute of Technology established in India on 1994. IIT Guwahati is a public technical and research institute mainly recognised as Institute Of National Technology. The NIRF India Rankings 2024 which was released on 11th June 2024 ranked IIT Guwahati 7 rank in engineering and overall categories in the college. 

IIT Guwahati is located in Assam, India on 703.95 acres with a great infrastructure. The college was established in 1994 by an act of parliament. The first academic year began in 1995. The students and teachers are provided with accommodation within the college. The campus provide all co curricular activities such as  outdoor games which includes volleyball, basketball and football. There are  facilities for sports, indoor games, and gymnasium. All students are provided with single seater accommodation. For girls separate accommodation is provided by the college. 

The campus of IIT is the most beautiful campus in India a it is situated on the banks of Brahmaputra and abuts the north Guwahati town of Aminagon. The hostels of the college are named on the basis of rivers and tributaries of north -East India: Manas, Dihing, Kapili, Siang, Kameng, Barak, the girl’s hostel Subansiri , Umiam, Dibang,the largest hostel Brahmaputra which is the new girls' hostel, Lohit and Disang which is the new boys' hostel. Apart from all of these the college provides a hostel for married scholars, which is a hostel for married postgraduates.

 The Institute has eleven departments and five interdisciplinary academic centres, offering b tech, bdes, MA, mdes, mtech, msc and phd programmes. Along with this institution has following departments:

The Admission procedure for UG Courses is through JEE advanced and for  PG is done through GATE  score and  through Ph.D-NET examination one can get admission for Ph.D Courses. Presently there are 6117 students with 415 faculty members and 300 support staff.
