The National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR) was established in 1983. It is a rented premises which is located at Lucknow under the Indian Council of Agriculture Research for undertaking research related to the conservation of Fish germplasm resources. The permanent infrastructure of this Bureau was developed in 1999 at Canal Ring Road, P.O. Dilkusha, Telibagh which is located at Lucknow. This institution is approved by Indian Council of Agricultural Research. It is certified by ISO. The main motive of this institution is conservation of fish and its genetic resources for their proper utilization and for its posterity.

The main motive of this institution is to collect, classify fish genetic resources of the country and to maintain and preserve fish material is their main aim. This Bureau is an air-conditioned library with approximately 6900 books. The library consists of 27 foreign and 68 Indian journals. The faculty of this institution is very knowledgeable and has expertise in their field. This institution also has a fully air conditioned auditorium and conference hall and one committee room. The geographic coverage of this institution is national. The scientific discipline of this institution is Fisheries and Aquaculture. Infrastructure of this institution is excellent. This institution has expertise in various fields like development of fish database, genetic characterization of fish species, risk analysis of exotic species, diagnostics for OIE notified pathogens, expertise in research of aquatic microbes and areas of germplasm. The main focus of this institution is to conserve threatened species of fish, exotic fish and many other species.
