The state university, Maharaja Bir Bikram University is located in Agartala, Tripura and was established in 2015. the university is named after Bir Bikram Kishore Debbarman, who was the rulling maharaja of the princely state of Tripura. 

There are three colleges affiliated to Maharaja Bir Bikram University:

1. Bir Bikram Memorial college

2. Maharaja Bir Bikram College

3. Tripura Government Law college
