Indian Institute of Technology Mardas (IIT Madras) is a public technical institution and research university. It is basically located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It is recognized as an Institute of National Importance. It was the 3rd IIT established in 1959 with the technical and financial aid from the government of West Germany. The National Institutional Ranking Framework of the Ministry of Human Resource Development has ranked the Indian Institute of Technology Mardas the top engineering Institute of India for continuous five years (2016-2020). The maximum percentage of the campus is a protected forest, from the Guindy National Park, which is home to a large number of extinct animals such as chital (spotted deer), black buck, bonnet macaque and other rare wild animals.

Their motto is ‘सिद्धिर्भवति कर्मजा’ the translation of which means ‘Success is born out of action’. The chairman of this 62 year old IIT is Mr. Pawan Kumar Goenka with the director Mr. Bhaskar Ramamurthi. The deans of this Institute are Jagdeesh Kumar V, Koshy Varghese, Ligy Philip, Mashesh Panchagnula, Mishra A K, Ravindra Gettu, N J Vasa, Raghu Rangaswamy. This IIT has a total of 599 staff with an average of 8,922 students, among which 3,958 are undergraduates, 2,493 postgraduates, and 2,471 doctoral students. For admission, the candidates must have passed JEE Mains. Also it is necessary that the candidates compulsorily be among the top 2,50,000 students. Besides, the students necessarily have to score a minimum of 75% aggregate marks (65% for SC/ST/OBC) in their 12th standard (or other equivalent exams).
Different student activities like Shaastra, Saarang, Departmental festivals (Mechanica, CEA, Fest, Chemlava, Amalgam and many more), The Entrepreneurship Cell and many more of such events are organized by different sections of the institution.
